SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball (33-17, 20-5 WCC) secured their 20th win in WCC play with a quick 12-2 run rule victory over Seattle (18-29, 11-14 WCC) on Thursday.
The win tied the GU program record for wins in WCC play in a single season, with the Zags getting two more chances to set a new high mark for conference play in their final season in the WCC after already securing the regular season title.
The Zags secured the win with another huge night on offense, putting up seven doubles in just seven innings. This tied for the third highest amount of doubles ever hit by a team in a single game at Patterson Baseball Complex and the fourth most doubles hit by a GU team in any location. Prior to today's deluge of doubles the Zags ranked 8th in all of Division 1 Baseball in doubles per game with 2.43.
Jacob Wrubleski had two of those doubles, mixing in a two run home run to finish today with eight total bases and three extra base hits. Justin Feld has his fifth Quality Start of the season, giving up just two runs over six innings. Feld struck out eight batters while only allowing four hits.
Feld initially gave up a home run to the game's leadoff batter but rallied to keep Seattle off the scoreboard for the next five innings. Feld only allowed an additional run in the sixth inning, allowing a lead runner to score on a wild pitch.
The Zags scored a leadoff man of their own, with Ricky Sanchez opening the home half of the first inning with a single and coming around to score alongside Mikey Bell to give GU an early lead.
Wrubleski's two run home run in the second inning gave Gonzaga the lead, and the Zags never looked back while clicking on offense. They added another three runs in the fourth inning, as Wrubleski led off with a double and was scored by Bo Shinkle. Shinkle and Sanchez were then driven in on another hit by Ryder Young to extend the lead.
Wrubleski had another double in the very next inning, scoring another run when Shinkle drove him in again on a single, an identical scoring sequence in back to back innings. Shinkle was then driven in again by a double from Sanchez. Young had another leadoff double in the sixth inning, as Noah Meffert and Hudson Shupe each drove in another run on back to back doubles to extend the lead. Gonzaga then secured the early end with a run rule victory as Maddox Haley hit yet another double to drive in Sanchez to give Gonzaga the ten run mercy rule in the seventh inning.
Gonzaga will look to secure the program WCC wins record when they take on Seattle again at 6pm on Friday.
