Box Score
SEATTLE - Jason Bay and Jared Hertz each drove in 3 runs Saturday afternoon but it was not enough as Gonzaga (4-3) fell to the Washington Huskies (3-5), 10-8, in the night cap of the Zags / Huskies double-header in Seattle. Gonzaga had won the opening game 7-3.
The Bulldogs got things started in the top of the second inning as they scored two runs the first courtesy of a Hertz double to left center that plated Barry Matthews. Hertz would eventually come around to score as Eric Rodland drove him home to give the Zags a 2-0 lead.
Washington countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning. Gonzaga would push across two more runs in the top of the third inning as Hertz once again doubled to center to score Jason Bay. Catcher Sam Hess would drive home the other Zags run scoring Matthews with an outfield single.
Both teams traded runs to give Gonzaga a 5-4 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. The Bulldogs appeared to chase Husky pitcher Matt Massingale (1-1) putting together a three run output in the sixth. Eric Rodland walked and Jeremy Doane singled to left field to set the table for Jason Bay's first home run of the season, a three-run job to rightfield.
With the Zags leading 8-4, Washington exploded on Zags pitching in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Huskies put together a combination of singles and stolen bases to crawl back into the ball game. Gonzaga would use three pitchers in the inning before losing pitcher Matt Siwek (0-1) could finally close the door on Washington. Taylor Grant would then enter for the Huskies and collect his second save of the series.
Gonzaga and Washington play the final game of the four game series on Sunday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. Gonzaga will need to win the game in order to split the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
