SAN DIEGO - San Diego State (7-5) scored four runs in the second and added six more in the fourth as the Aztecs won 11-2 to sweep a baseball doubleheader from Gonzaga (2-3) Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs won the opener 6-5 in extra innings.
Cody Haven opened the damaging second inning with the first of six Aztec singles in the inning against Gonzaga starter Scott Stencil (1-1). Anthony Gwynn, Taber Lee and Carlo Cota would give San Diego State starter Marcos Mendoza all the offense he would need as they had consecutive RBI singles in the second. Cota would be caught stealing to allow the Zags to end the inning. Mendoza (1-1) would dominate the Gonzaga hitters all afternoon working seven innings allowing only two runs while striking out nine Gonzaga batters.
In the fourth inning San Diego State ended its scoring for the day as Garrett Cook drove home two runs with a double to left. Cook would finish the game with two hits while Anthony Gwynn led the Aztecs with 3 hits on the afternoon.
Gonzaga's offense was led by Danny Evans and Jared Hertz with two hits each, Evans driving home Hertz in the seventh for one of the Bulldogs two runs. The three game series between the two teams will wrap up on Sunday at noon.
