CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State (12-9) scored 10 runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Beavers set down Gonzaga (7-8) 12-6 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Gonzaga had jumped out to an early lead scoring six runs with two outs in the top of the second. John Gebbers singled home Nate Gold who had reached on a fielding error by the Beavers. Danny Evans followed with a single down the right field line and Eric Rodland walked to load the bases for Kevin Cave. Cave then smashed the Zags second grand slam of the season over the center field fence. Barry Matthews scored the final Gonzaga run of the game on the second Oregon State error of the inning.
Kyle Nearhood looked good in the start for the Zags going five innings and allowing only one Oregon State run in the fourth. Sean Ingalls followed with two solid innings of relief out of the bullpen giving up a single run in the seventh. Eric Everson (0-1) then set down the first two batters of the OSU eighth before the wheels fell off the Gonzaga bullpen.
Jason McBride ignited the rally with a triple down the right field line. After a combination of singles and walks the Beavers tied the game at 6-6 and set the table for Josh Carter who delivered a grand slam to left. Oregon State would score two more runs in the inning before Greg Brooks could get Andy Jarvis to end the inning with a fly out.
Cave was the only Gonzaga player to get multiple hits as he finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with 4 RBI. Chris Wilkins (2-0) picked up the win for Oregon State after pitching two innings in relief. OSU was led by Brian Barden with a 3-for-3 day, while Carter finished with a team high 4 RBI.
