Box Score
SEATTLE - Gonzaga (27-25) and Washington (29-20) played through a driving rain on Tuesday afternoon in Seattle with the Bulldogs scoring a late run in the game in order to pull out a 3-2 victory at Husky Ballpark. Game two was cancelled after a one hour rain delay. Gonzaga returns to action this weekend as they battle Pepperdine in the WCC Playoffs starting Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Malibu.
Both teams sent freshman arms to the hill during the midweek contest with Washington starter Clay Johnson tossing no hit baseball through the opening four innings. The Zags finally broke through for two runs in the fifth inning as John Gebbers reached on an infield error. He would come around to score on GU's first hit of the game, a RBI double by Danny Evans. Brian Munhall would drive home the Zags second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Evans.
Washington scored the games first run in the third inning taking advantage of a Gonzaga miscue. After reaching on a single, Ben Miller stole second and third base and moved home as the throw to third skipped into left field. The Huskies tacked on another run in the fourth against GU starter Errol Simonitsch as Mike Wagner led off the inning with a single and scored on a double to the right field corner by Steve Ramsey. Simonitsch worked five strong innings striking out six Husky batters.
Gonzaga pushed across its final run of the game in the ninth inning as Jared Hertz led off with a hit up the middle. Nate Gold followed with a fielder's choice in which he advanced to second on a throwing error by Washington. Another infield error on pinch hitter's Kyle Rajsich's ball to the right side allowed Gold to score from third base. Tyler Shepple (0-5) was tagged with loss despite allowing only one unearned run.
Phil Banta (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings including stranding the tying run on second in the ninth to pick up his first win of the season. Hertz, Evans and Eric Rodland collected Gonzaga's three hits while Ramsey had two doubles for the Huskies.
