SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga (24-25, 12-13 WCC) snapped its eight game losing streak in dramatic fashion Friday afternoon as John Gebbers singled to right and Brian Munhall raced home from second base to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 win over Santa Clara (23-28, 13-12 WCC) in West Coast Conference baseball action at August/A.R.T. Stadium. The two teams will resume the series with 1 p.m. games on Saturday and Sunday.

Munhall led off the top of the ninth with a single off Santa Clara starter Matt Travis (5-3). Jeff Culpepper then moved Munhall to second with a sacrifice bunt. Santa Clara went to the bullpen for relief pitcher Chad Fillinger. Gebbers then greeted Fillinger with a single to right, Munhall raced around the bases beating a throw from right fielder Joey Gomes. Travis had allowed only eight hits with five strike outs to be the hard luck loser.

Gonzaga starter Brent Dayton (4-4) was brilliant for the Bulldogs. Dayton scattered six hits with two strike outs as he pitched a complete game. Santa Clara's lone run was unearned in the sixth inning as with runners on second and third Jack Headley reached on an error. Pat Peavey rounded third a little to far and was caught in a run down to keep the Broncos to only one run.

Sam Hess delivered the Bulldogs first run of the game in the bottom of the first as his RBI single to center scored Grant Zurmely who opened with a double. Zurmely and Gebbers each finished with two hits to lead Gonzaga while six players collected hits for Santa Clara. Gomes, who currently ranks second in the NCAA in doubles, hit his 29th two-bagger of the season for the Broncos.
