SEATTLE — Gonzaga Baseball (16-14, 6-3 WCC) secured a decisive 9-2 victory over Washington (15-17, 6-6 Big Ten) on Monday, scoring runs in each of the final four innings to lock in the big win.
This is largest margin of victory in the series since 2010 by either side. Gonzaga has now won four games in a row against Washington, and the Bulldogs have won eight of the last nine meetings with the Huskies.
Three home runs helped the Zags to jump out to the win.
Maddox Haley hit a three-run home run in the first inning, providing what proved to be the winning margin in just the first frame.
Hudson Shupe added a triple before being driven in to give the Bulldogs a four run lead after the first three outs.
Washington scored their only two runs of the game in the fourth inning.
Finbar O'Brien picked up his second win of the year, tossing five innings while only allowing three hits and a single walk. O'Brien struck out five batters.
Noah Meffert extended the lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right field, while Haley chipped in a sacrifice fly in the seventh. In the eighth inning
Bo Shinkle brought Meffert home on an RBI single to bump the GU advantage up to seven to two.
Shupe hit a home run in the top of the ninth, adding another two runs to bring GU to the large final margin.
Landon Hood and
Joe Thornton combined to keep the Huskies off the board for the final four innings to secure the big win. Each pitcher tossed two scoreless innings, with Hood allowing no hits and striking out three UW batters. Thornton struck out a career high five batters while only allowing a single hit.
The Zags will look to sweep the two game series with Washington when they take to the field in Seattle at noon on Tuesday.
