Box Score
SURPRISE, Ariz. - Oregon State starter Ben Rowe (2-0) limited the Gonzaga Bulldogs to just six hits and one run during six strong innings on the mound as the Beavers (3-2) defeated Gonzaga (0-2) 5-1 in second day action at the Surprise Coca-Cola Spring Training Baseball Classic.
The Bulldogs jumped on the board in the second inning as Brad Welker drove home the Bulldogs lone run of the contest as he singled through the left side with two outs. Jeff Culpepper raced around to score after reaching base on a single earlier in the frame. Rowe would allow only three more hits during his day on the mound before Mike Ekstrom pitched the final three innings for the save.
Gonzaga received a strong pitching performance from starter Errol Simonitsch (0-1) as he pitched into the fifth inning allowing two unearned runs. Simonitsch struck out seven Beavers batters but was on the losing end of the decision. Eric Everson relieved Simonitsch in the fifth and was lifted in the sixth as Oregon State tacked on three more runs, two coming after a Gonzaga error.
Seth Pietsch delivered all the offense Oregon State would need during the third inning as he hit a two-out home run that scored Rob Recuenco. Recuenco reached with two outs on a fielding error by the Bulldogs. Gonzaga would finish the day with three errors after playing a perfect defensive game in their opener against Arizona State. Andy Jarvis collected the only other OSU RBI in the sixth on a fielder's choice.
Kemp Quackenbush and Welker each finished with two hits to lead Gonzaga. The Bulldogs will play Oklahoma State on Sunday to round out action in the 2003 Surprise Coca-Cola Spring Training Baseball Classic. Kerisi Reynolds led the Beavers with a 4-for-5 performance while Jarvis went 2-for-4
