SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University (20-20-1, 8-12 WCC) received its two best pitching performances of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs swept a Saturday doubleheader from the University of San Diego with two complete game shutouts. Junior Ed Clelland limited the Toreros (22-27, 11-12 WCC) to just four hits in game one as Gonzaga won 5-0. In the nightcap sophomore Eric Dworkis struck out 10 San Diego batters as the Bulldogs exploded for a 14-0 win over the West Coast Conference West Division leader.
Clelland (4-3) was dominant in his pitching performance in the opener as he held San Diego to just four hits while striking out three batters. Clelland allowed just two San Diego runners to reach second base in the outing, Mike Oseguera reaching second on a double in the second inning. It was the second complete game shutout of the season for Clelland who earlier this year tossed a 1-0 shutout against Bowling Green State University at the Fresno State Pepsi/Johnny Quik Baseball Classic.
Freshman shortstop Nick Froman provided Clelland all the offense he needed on the afternoon when his single to right in the second inning scored David Johnson from third. Froman would add another hit later in the game and score the Bulldogs run in the eighth on Jeff Culpepper's RBI single.
Culpepper led the Bulldogs offense in the first game with four hits and two RBI. In addition to his RBI single in the eighth, Culpepper had an RBI single in the sixth. Culpepper accounted for Gonzaga's run in the fifth as he scored on a wild pitch after a reaching on a triple to right center. USD starter Kyle Collins (6-4) was tagged with loss after allowing only two Gonzaga runs in five innings of work.
In the nightcap Dworkis (6-4) continued to dominated San Diego hitters as the sophomore right-hander struck out 10 and allowed only six hits. Freddy Sandoval accounted for two of San Diego's six hits but the Toreros could never figure out the Zags starter as Dworkis tossed his second complete game of the season.
Gonzaga gave Dworkis a one-run advantage in the second as Eric Rodland drew a bases loaded walk against San Diego starter Aaron Wilson (3-6). Wilson would be the hard luck loser in the blow out despite only allowing one earned run in five-plus innings of work. The Bulldogs also scored against Wilson in the sixth as
Danny Evans singled to right to score Gordon Corder.
The wheels came off for the Toreros as they went to the bullpen which surrendered 12 runs in three innings of relief. Gonzaga scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. Kemp Quackenbush had a key two-run double in the seventh while Rodland drove home two in the eighth with a bases loaded double to left. Chris Sinner capped the scoring run with a two-run single that gave Sinner a team-high four hits in the contest.
Culpepper and Evans each added three hits in the win as Gonzaga pounded out 19 hits in the second game after 11 base knocks in the opener. The two teams will conclude their three game West Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Spokane Falls Community College with a noon start. The Bulldogs have now won five straight games including three straight since moving their home games to SFCC.
