PULLMAN, Wash. - Jamie Buterbaugh and the Gonzaga University women's tennis team all made it in the consolation round of the first day of the 2003 Cougar Classic at Washington State University on Friday afternoon. Boise State University, University of Montana, University of Wyoming, University of Idaho, Montana State University, Gonzaga and Washington State all participated in the tournament.
Buterbaugh was defeated by Jemima Hayward of Boise State (6-2, 7-5), but came back to defeat Michaela Zima of Montana (6-0, 6-1). Buterbaugh will compete for fifth place in the No. 1 singles category on Saturday morning.
Kendall Bates stepped up for the Bulldogs in the No. 2 singles competition. Bates fell to Kareen Konishi of the Idaho (6-0, 6-1), but defeated Lindsey Tergerson of Montana (6-2, 6-1). Bates will face Jennifer Hancock of University of Wyoming on Saturday morning.
Leigh Orne was Gonzaga's No. 3 singles player, but was defeated by Annabelle Janairo of Montana (6-0, 6-1) and Karolina Rowiniski of Wyoming (6-1, 6-3). Orne will compete for seventh place on Saturnday morning.
No. 4 for the Bulldogs was Sirrah Williams, who fell to Megan Biorkman of Boise State (6-1, 6-1), but defeated Colby Fannin of Montana (6-2, 6-3). Williams will face Ivette Duran of Montana State for the fifth place claim.
Gonzaga's Katie Sanders played No. 5 and was defeated by Zsofia Fodor of Washington State (6-1, 7-5), but defeated Remy Clark of Montana State (6-3, 4-6, 6-1).
Connie Head and Hanna Tenney both played at the No. 6 position. Head was defeated in the first round, while Tenney fell in the second round of play. They will both compete Saturday afternoon for consolation positions.
Doubles faired well for the Bulldogs as the tandem of Buterbaugh and Bates surpassed the first round, but fell in the second to Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez of Washington State. Williams and Head paired up to make it to the second round also, but were defeated. Orne and Sanders fell in the first round, but will compete in consolation play on Saturday afternoon.
The tournament will continue into Saturday for consolation and championship rounds of play.
