Women's Tennis Swept By Pepperdine, 4-0

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team was swept, 4-0, by the No. 1 seed in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships on Friday in Moraga, Calif. The Bulldogs fell to 11-12 with the loss to Pepperdine University. Gonzaga will turn around and play host No. 5 seed Saint Mary's College on Saturday, April 24 at 9 a.m.

The Waves took care of doubles play early as Natalie Braverman and Marve Asimgil defeated Leigh Orne and Sirrah Williams, then Eva Dickes and Lise Sissler clamed the point with an 8-2 win over Katie Sanders and Florence Wasko. According to tournament rules, the No. 1 doubles match was suspended between Pepperdine duo Charlotte Vernaz and Caroline Raba and Gonzaga tandem Jamie Buterbaugh and Angela Fry.

Pepperdine took care of singles play as well, claiming the three necessary points for the win. Raba defeated Fry in the No. 2 spot (6-3, 6-1), Vernaz defeated Orne at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2), and Karin Schlapbach defeated Sanders at No. 5 (6-2, 6-0) for the win. Buterbaugh, Williams and Connie Head all left their matches unfinished due to tournament rules.
