PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team's late rally fell short in a 8-4 non-conference loss to Pacific Northwest Rival Washington State University (18-20)Tuesday evening at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the Bulldogs (23-14) trailing 8-0 heading into the top of the eighth inning the Zags dug in and tried to rally for a win for the second consecutive day. Sophomore Scott Campbell got things rolling with his single through the left side and advanced to second on Darin Holcomb's walk. Senior Jeff Culpepper then brought Campbell home on a RBI single through the left side for GU's first run of the game. The Zags then load the bases when Kiel Thibault walked. GU's next batter Mike Terry recorded an RBI on his bases loaded walk and GU's final two runs of the game came when Aaron McGuinness hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The sacrifice fly brought Culpepper across from third and advanced Thibault to third. On the same play Thibault would round third and come home on a throwing error by the Cougar pitcher. The Bulldogs did not score in the ninth inning leaving the game at its final of 8-4.
The Cougars jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as Kaeo Rubin scored from third on a bases loaded fielder's choice and Zach McAngus would drive in one run on a single to the shortstop. The Cougars tacked on six more runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach for the Zags.
Culpepper was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs going 2-for-5 with one RBI, one double and one run scored. With his double Culpepper has moved into a tie for second all-time in career doubles at Gonzaga with 50.
Cougar starter Wayne Daman Jr. (5-3) was credited with the win allowing no runs on two hits in three innings of work. Gonzaga's Chris Albrecht (0-1) was saddled with the loss allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday as they open a three-game West Coast Conference series with Pepperdine University at Avista Stadium. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
