SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game West Coast Conference series, 12-2, to the Broncos of Santa Clara University Friday evening in the final game at Buck Shaw Stadium.

With the win the Broncos improve to 20-22 overall and 5-13 in the WCC, while the Bulldogs fall to 25-16 overall and 12-6 in the WCC.

SCU did most of their damage in the third inning as they scored six runs on seven hits. The Broncos scored their runs on a Jason Matteucci RBI triple, RBI doubles by Michael Thompson and Kris Watts, a Ryan Conan RBI single, and a throwing error by the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs got on the boards in the sixth inning as they scored one run. Jeff Culpepper got things started with his single and moved to second on Aaron McGuinness' walk. Mike Terry then loaded the bases with his single to right field. Culpepper came across on a Matt Hibbitts sacrifice fly to right field to give GU its first run of the game.

After SCU added three more runs to their lead the Zags then took one back in the eighth inning. Bobby Carlson led off the inning with a double to right field. He then moved to third on Culpepper's fly out to right field. After two walks, Carlson then scored on a catcher's interference. The Bulldogs would then leave three runners stranded on base as they could not push across another run.

Culpepper led the Bulldogs offense as he went 2-for-5 with one run scored.

Adam Sanabria (2-0) picked up the win for the Broncos allowing one run on four hits, while striking out six in six innings of work. Junior right-hander Josh Monroe (7-3) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs as he allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday as they will christen Santa Clara's new ballpark, Stephen Schott Stadium, with a 1 p.m. WCC game against Santa Clara.
