STILLWATER, Okla. - The Gonzaga University baseball team opened the 2008 season with a 6-1 loss to No. 27 Oklahoma State University Friday at Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, Okla.

Earning the win for the Cowboys (1-0) was Andrew Oliver (1-0), who allowed on run on two hits during five innings of work.

Oklahoma State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jordy Mercer to drive in Michael Dabbs. Dabbs reached base on a walk before advancing to second on a single by Matt Hauge and earning third on a Gonzaga fielding error.

The Zags knotted the score at one with a run in the top of the third. Bryan Winston led off the inning drawing a walk and reached second on a single through the right side by Evan Wells. Winston and Wells then each advanced base on a balk to give the Bulldogs runners on second and third. With one out, the inning closed with a run-scoring double play. Jason Chatwood hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Winston, but Wells was called out on the play.

The Cowboys scored the eventual game winning run in the fourth frame thanks to a one-run single to right by Donnie Webb.

Oklahoma State extended its lead to 5-1, scoring three runs in the fifth inning as the Cowboys combined three hits, including a two-run double by Hague, to score three runs. The Cowboys went on to add an insurance run in the sixth with an unearned run scored by Webb. Webb, who reached on an error, was scored on a single through the infield by Dabbs.

Gonzaga threatened to narrow the score in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to score, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Bulldogs and Cowboys will resume the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. PST. Gonzaga's Cory Powell, who is returning from a red shirt season, is expected to take the mound in the opening contest of the twin bill, with Matt Fields expected to get the starting nod for the Zags' in game two.
