Stockton, Calif. - Five Zags, including Jason Chatwood, recorded multiple hits on the day as the Gonzaga University baseball team recorded a season-high 18 hits en route to an 11-5 victory over the University of the Pacific at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.
Chatwood led the Bulldogs (5-5) on the afternoon, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and one run batted in. His RBI came on his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left in the second inning. Ryan Wiegand also hit the ball well, recording three hits, while driving in four and scoring two. Wiegand fell a double short of hitting for the cycle after recording a single in the first, a triple in seventh and a home run in the ninth. In addition to Chatwood and Wiegand, Byran Winton, Tyson Van Winkle and Grant Kveder recorded multiple hits. Winston recorded two doubles and a single, while Van Winkle and Kveder had two hits a piece.
Gonzaga starter Matt Fields (1-1) earned the win as the junior allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Andrew Danner and Jeremy Stumetz each saw time out of the pen for the Bulldogs. Pacific (2-9) starter Tyler Waldron (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing 8 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits during 6.1 frames.
GU jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the first, scoring all three runs before an out was recorded. Evan Wells, Chatwood and Van Winkle each scored in the inning as all three reached on singles.
Pacific responded with two runs in the bottom of the opening frame with singles by Joe Oliveira, Adam Ching and Jason Haar.
Chatwood added a tally to the Zags' score in the second with his long ball to bring the score to 4-2.
In the fourth, Michael Rhodes provided the Bulldogs with an addition run after reaching on a fielder's choice, stealing second, advancing to third on a balk and eventually scoring on a groundout by Wells.
Gonzaga rallied for four runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run triple by Wiegand to score Chatwood and Van Winkle. Wiegand could score on a double by Winston before Marcus McKimmy recorded the final inning run on a sacrifice fly by Shawn Wayt.
The Tigers added solo runs in the final three frames of the game. In the seventh, John Joines hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left. In the eighth, Joines drew a bases loaded walk to drive home Nick Longmire. In the ninth, the Tigers' final run cam courtesy of a double down the leftfield line by Longmire.
Wiegand opened a two run ninth inning with his home run to right field, his first of the season. Winston would score the second run of the inning on a single through the left side by Rhodes.
Gonzaga and Pacific will wrap-up the three-game series Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Senior Cory Powell is expected to get the start as the Zags look for their first series sweep of the 2008 campaign.
