Bulldogs Complete Sweep Of Huskies

Spokane, Wash. - Behind a 3-for-4 performance from Ryan Wiegand, the Gonzaga University baseball team completed a two-game sweep of the University of Washington Tuesday with an 8-4 victory at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane.

Jeremy Stumetz (3-0) earned his first start of the season for GU (20-16), as the sophomore allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four over 6.0 frames. Brandon Harmon and Cody Martin each saw time out of the pen for the Bulldogs. Martin continued his strong rookie campaign by one-hitting the Huskies (23-12) while posting two strikeouts over the final 2.0 innings of the contest. Washington starter Nick Haughian (5-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks over 3.0 innings of work.

For the fifth straight game, the visiting team jumped on the board in the top of the first inning. Washington took an early 2-0 lead to open the contest thanks to a solo home run by Brett Wilcox and a run-scoring single by Brian Pearl.

Stumetz then held the Huskies scoreless until the sixth frame as Gonzaga posted runs in its opening four frames to take a 7-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the first, Evan Wells drew a lead-off walk before being plated on a single up the middle by Wiegand. In the second, Wells recorded a run batted in as he hit into a fielder's choice to score Mark Castellitto, who had led off the inning with an infield single. Gonzaga added another run in the third thanks to a single through the left side by Tyson Van Winkle to drive in Marcus McKimmy, who led off the frame with a walk.

The Bulldogs broke out for four runs in the bottom of the fourth as they recorded five hits, including two home runs. For the fourth consecutive inning, GU's leadoff batter reached base, this time thanks to a single by Wells. Wells came around to score two batters later on a long ball to right field by Wiegand. The next batter, Van Winkle, walked before Castellitto hit the second two-run shot of the inning.

Washington added runs in the top of the sixth and seventh, narrowing the Zags' lead to 7-4. Bradley Boyer drove in a run in the sixth on a single up the middle while Andy Lentz posted a one-run single in the seventh.

Gonzaga capped scoring the in bottom of the seventh as Wells came around to score on a UW throwing error.

In addition to Wiegand, Wells, Castellitto and Grant Kveder posted multiple hits on the afternoon. Wells also scored thee runs, while Castellitto drove in two. Castellitto led the Zags in the series, batting at a .714 clip, going 5-for-7 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and five RBI.

Gonzaga will continue its nine-game homestand Friday as the Zags resume West Coast Conference play with the University of Portland. The three-game series with the Pilots will open Friday at 6:30 before contests Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
