Spokane, Wash. - Cody Martin threw a one-run complete game Sunday as the Gonzaga University baseball team defeated visiting University of Portland 5-1 at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. With the win, the Zags completed a three-game West Coast Conference sweep of the Pilots.
In his first career start, Martin (2-0) pitched a gem for the Bulldogs (26-16, 5-6 WCC) as the freshman allowed one run on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts while going the distance. Portland (17-23, 2-10 WCC) starter Ari Ronick (3-5) suffered the loss allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out four.
For the week Martin posted an impressive line, allowing one run on nine hits over 11.0 innings to post a 0.82 earned run average. He also struck out six while walking one batter.
Ryan Wiegand opened scoring in the bottom of the second as the junior led off the frame with a solo home run for his team-leading ninth shot of the season.
Gonzaga added another run in the fourth as Tyson Van Winkle hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Marcus McKimmy. McKimmy had led off the inning with a single to center before advancing to second on a single by Wiegand.
Danny Meier narrowed the Bulldogs' lead in the top of the fifth to 2-1, as the Pilot led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.
The Zags answered in the bottom of the frame, with two insurance runs. After retiring the first two batters, Gonzaga strung together a walk and three consecutive hits to drive in two runs. Jason Chatwood drove in the first run with a single to right that plated Drew Heid, who had drawn a walk and advance to second on a single by Evan Wells. Wells was then plated on double to left field by McKimmy.
The Bulldogs added the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a one-run single by Chatwood that scored Wells.
Wells, Chatwood, McKimmy and Wiegand each posted two hits on the afternoon, while the only other GU batter to record a hit was Van Winkle. For the three-game series with Portland, Wells led the Bulldogs at the plate hitting at a .500 clip. The junior went 6-for-14 with four runs scored and three runs batted in. He also led the squad with a .600 on-base percentage.
The Zags will take the field again Tuesday as they travel to Pullman to face Washington State University at 5:30 p.m. Following Tuesday's contest, GU will return home to face Lewis-Clark State College Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
