Spokane, Wash. - The Gonzaga University wrapped up the home slate of the 2008 schedule Tuesday, falling 7-5 to Washington State University in 11 innings at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane.
Gonzaga (28-22) reliever Cody Martin (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing two runs, both unearned, on one hit over the final 3.2 innings. Reedy Berg, GU's starter, and CJ McClure each saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs. Washington State (28-22) utilized seven pitchers, with Ross Humes (4-3) taking the victory. Humes held the Zags scoreless, allowing only two hits over the final 3.0 innings.
Gonzaga scored five innings in the top of the first inning, before being held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
In the opening frame, the Zags used only one hit and three walks, as well as two hit-by-pitches to drive in all five runs. Following two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases to opening the inning, Ryan Wiegand smacked a two-run single to drive in Evan Wells and Marcus McKimmy. Following a fly out, a walk to Grant Kveder loaded the bases again before Tyson Van Winkle was hit-by-a-pitch to bring home Drew Heid. During the next at-bat Wiegand scored on a wild pitch that also advanced Kveder and Van Winkle to third and second, respectively. The final run of the inning was plated as Kveder came around to score on a ground out by Brett Nicholas.
Washington State answered the Zags' five runs with two in the top o f the second. Jared Prince led off the inning with a double to center before scoring on a double to right center by Scott Suttmeier. Suttmeier then scored the second tally of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Matt Fannelli.
The Cougars continued to chip away at the Bulldogs' lead with a solo home run to left field by Prince, narrowing the scored to 5-3.
WSU tied the score 5-5 in the top of the seventh thanks to a pair of one-run doubles by Travis Coulter and Shane Vucinich. The Cougars threatened to added more runs in the inning, but the rally was halted as Alex Burg hit into a bases loaded double play, which was called due to runner interference.
Washington State broke the tie in the top of the 11th inning, posting two runs to take the 7-5 lead. Michael Weber led of the inning reaching on a two-base fielding error. Weber advanced to third on a ground out, before Paul Gran walked to put runners on the corner. Jim Murphy then belted a double to deep center field to drive in Weber and Gran and take the lead.
Wiegand led the Bulldogs in the contest, being the only GU player to record multiple hits. Wiegand went 2-for-6 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Wells, Heid, Mark Castellitto, Kveder, Nicholas, Bryan Winston and Michael Rhodes each recorded one hit in the contest, while Van Winkle and Nicholas each drove in a run a piece.
Gonzaga will wrap up the 2008 season this weekend with a three-game West Coast Conference series at Loyola Marymount University. In addition, depending on the Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University series, the Zags could be forced to play a make-up game against the Waves in Malibu on Monday.
