LIHUE, Kaua'i - Gonzaga University's men's golf team heads into the final round of the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational at Puakea Golf Course in solid position to finish second, while the University of San Diego seems to have the team title all but wrapped up with a 36-hole total of 550 and a 23-shot lead.
The Bulldogs shot a second-round 285 for a 36-hole total of 575 to move up a spot to fourth, just two shots behind James Madison University and host University of Hawai'i which are tied for second heading into Wednesday's final 18 holes.
Freshman Travis Johnsen shot a second-round 68 for a 36-hole score of 142 for a tie for 15th and Kyle Huus fired a 69 to stand at 143 and tied for 17th to pace the Bulldogs Tuesday. Derek Cheney, who shot a career-best 68 in Monday's opening round, shot 73 over the 6,953-yard, par 72 layout and is at 141, slipping into a tie for 12th
The University of San Diego's Ben Murray is the individual leader heading into the final round at 134 after rounds of 66-68. He holds a two-shot lead over Camden Nicholson of the University of Utah and Joseph Harrison of USD who is playing as an individual.
"We are in contention to finish very well," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. ""We'll need to play well again Wednesday to improve our position."
Gray said Johnsen played an exceptional back nine to carry the Bulldogs.
"Travis made the turn at even par, then had five birdies on the back nine. Kyle also played well and made some great putts down the stretch," Gray said.
Cheney just didn't have putts falling, according to Gray.
"Derek's 73 was plagued with putts burning the edges. He didn't strike the ball as well as he wanted but, like yesterday, kept his composure," Gray said.
