LIHUE, Kaua'i - Gonzaga University junior Oliver Grabb aced the 128-yard 16th with a sand wedge Tuesday during the second round of the third annual Kaua'i Invitational men's golf tournament at the 6,954-yard Puakea Golf Course.
Grabb's effort, on the way to a 74 and a 36-hole total of 151, weren't enough to keep the Bulldogs from slipping a couple of notches down the leaderboard.
Gonzaga, third entering the second round, shot a 297 and slipped into fifth, three strokes behind Seattle University in fourth heading into Wednesday's final round. Two-time defending champion University of San Diego is at 560 and increased its lead to 11 strokes over the University of British Columbia.
The best Bulldog round of the day was an even-par 72 turned in by Francis Santiago, giving him a 36-hole score of 147 and a tie for 13th. Kyle Huus matched Grabb's 74 Tuesday and is 12th at 146.
Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said conditions were windy Tuesday.
"We had three decent scores but didn't get the fourth. Travis (Johnsen) had two bad shots that destroyed his round resulting in a double bogey and a triple bogey," Gray said.
Johnsen, a sophomore, shot a second-round 77 for a 149.
Gray is hopeful his club can put together a solid round on the final day of the fall season Wednesday.
"We haven't put together a real solid round this year and tomorrow's our last chance for the fall season," Gray said. "We're going to need one to move up the leaderboard."
USD's Gunner Wiebe maintained the individual lead after a 71 Tuesday left him at 137 and a 3-stroke lead over Scott Malo of UBC who shot a second-round 69.
