CHANDLER, Ariz. - The spring golf season for Gonzaga University's men's team did not start the way head coach Robert Gray was hoping Monday at the ReBath Snowman Getaway hosted by Washington State University.
The Bulldogs opened with a 36-hole score of 624 over the Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course that plays 7,218 yards to par 72. That left the 11th-place Bulldogs well behind first-day leader University of Idaho at 582, the Vandals holding a 2-stroke advantage over the host Cougars.
The Bulldogs are three shots ahead of Utah Valley University and 11 strokes behind Seattle University heading into Tuesday's final 18-hole round.
Derek Cheney had the best day for the Bulldogs with a 75-77 for 152 and a tie for 25th. Cheney's 75 was the best Gonzaga round of the day. The next four Bulldogs are each separated by one stroke. Travis Johnsen is tied for 49th at 157 after rounds of 77-80, Kevin PArkhurst is tied for 53rd at 158 (81-77), Kyle Huus is tied for 57th with a 159 (78-81) and Jason Azzarito is tied for 60th at 160 (79-81).
Two Bulldogs are playing as individuals. Francis Santiago is tied for 49th at 157 with rounds of 76-81 and Oliver Grabb is 72nd at 167 after shooting 80-87.
Three golfers are tied for the individual lead at 141. Jace Long of the University of Missouri shot 67-74, Nick Ellis of WSU fired 69-72 and Brett Iliff of UMKC posted rounds of 70-71. The trio has a 1-shot lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
Rain hampered - and at one time delayed - the day's play, and the second round was played in 20 mph winds.
