Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's Billy Moon produced his first career three-hit game for the Bulldogs who suffered a 7-3 defeat to Santa Clara University at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field Saturday afternoon.

Moon, out of Spokane's University High, also drove in two runs and scored once for Gonzaga (14-30-1, 2-7-1 WCC) who had Mark Castellitto single in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 12 games. Cameron Edman also posted a multi-hit game for the Bulldogs, recording two hits and adding an RBI. Santa Clara used 16-hit attack to take its second straight game from the Zags and improve to 17-23 overall and 3-10 in the WCC.

The Bulldogs answered a two-run Santa Clara first inning with a single run in the second. Moon picked up his first hit of the afternoon with a one-out triple that short-hopped the left centerfield fence before coming home on Cameron Edman's single to right field for the first GU run of the day.

In the third, the Broncos used a couple walks and four hits to bring four runs across and open up a 6-1 lead. SCU added a single run in the fourth but the Zags received an RBI base-hit to centerfield from Moon to score Mark Castellitto and make it a 7-2 ball game.

Gonzaga used another Moon single to make it a 7-3 ball game in the sixth inning. Andy Hunter got things going with a one-out infield single and Clayton Eslick followed with a line-dive base-hit to center. The left-handed hitting Moon then stepped in took a 0-1 pitch back up the middle to drive home Hunter.

Santa Clara starter Alex Rivers held strong after that, holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the final three innings to earn the complete-game victory. Gonzaga's Jacob Hiatt struck out five in his 4.2 innings of relief work and Jacob Brown added two-scoreless innings of relief.

The Zags will send left-hander Ryan Carpenter to the mound in the series finale 1 p.m. Sunday.
