SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Troubles continued for the Gonzaga University women's volleyball team as it lost its seventh-straight match Thursday. Santa Clara University defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 at the Leavey Center to drop GU's record to 7-18 overall and 1-13 in West Coast Conference play. The Zags, whose only victory in league thus far this season was a 3-2 win against the University of Portland, Oct. 13, fell to the Broncos 25-21, 25-19, 25-20.
Gonzaga, who was held to 32 kills in the match, was led by junior middle hitter Kylie Edinger and redshirt-sophomore Meredith Crenshaw with nine and seven kills, respectively. Edinger also added a team-high three block assists.
Senior setter Denise Van de Mortel dished out 24 assists for Gonzaga s the Zags connected a .180 hitting percentage. GU mishit 14 balls on the night.
Santa Clara's (10-14, 5-8 WCC) offense was a bit more efficient that Gonzaga's as it finished with 18 more kills at 50. Despite 17 attack errors, the Broncos still finished with a respectable .292 attacking clip. Katherine Douglas, Dana Knudson and Kayla Lommori combined for 36 of the SCU's 50 kill, each closing out the match with 12.
Santa Clara held the 50-35 edge in digs, while Gonzaga held the slight 5.5-3 advantage in blocks.
Senior libero Laura Day led the Zags defensively with 15 digs; her 17th double-figure dig performance of the year.
Gonzaga looks to rebound when it plays at the University of San Francisco Saturday. Match is set for 1 p.m.
