SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Tyler Chism went 4-for-5 and hits for the cycle as the Gonzaga University baseball team used a season-best 15 hits to beat the University of Minnesota 10-3 Saturday on the campus of Sacramento State University.
Chism hit a single in the second inning, a triple in the third, a two-run home run in the fifth and a RBI double in the seventh to complete the cycle. Eric Lane also had four hits in the afternoon, hitting three singles and a double. Billy Moon went 2-for-5 in his second appearance in the top of the batting order, extending his hitting streak to a team-best five games.
The Bulldogs (6-7) used three pitchers. Starter Tyler Olson went four innings and allowed the three runs on eight hits. He struck out and walked three batters each. Andy Hunter (2-1) pitched four shutout innings to record the win. Minnesota's (5-6) Phil Isaksson suffered the loss after going five innings.
The designated home team Gophers grabbed an early lead in the first inning. Troy Larson bunted into a fielder's choice and after stealing second base, Nick O'Shea hit a RBI single through the left side.
But the Bulldogs came back in the second inning when Chism led off with a single and Hunter, who started the game at first base before coming in to relief, singled up the middle to move Chism to second. Following Cameron Edman's sacrifice bunt, Thomas Henderson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score in Chism.
Minnesota regained the lead in its half of the second inning when Sam Ryan hit a one-out double and scored on a single to left field by AJ Pettersen. The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the third and never looked back. Moon hit a one-out solo home run to right center to tie the game 3-3 and after hitting a single to left field, Lane scored on a RBI triple by Chism, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
Gonzaga took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning when Chism hit a two-run home run to left field. After Olson allowed a single and a walk to start the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs forfeited the designated hitter rule to bring Hunter in to pitch with nobody out stop the threat. He got out of the inning allowing one-run scored on a double play. Edman led off the sixth inning with a double to center field and after advancing third on a ground out he scored on a sacrifice fly hit by pinch hitter Clayton Eslick.
Gonzaga added two more runs in both the seventh and ninth inning. After Lane was hit by the pitcher, Marco Gonzales doubled down the left field line to record his first collegiate hit and an RBI. Chism followed Gonzales with a RBI double to right field to bring Gonzales home. Moon led off the ninth with a double to right center and Lane hit a single to the pitcher and Moon scored on an error charged to the pitcher. Gonzales hit another RBI double to score in Lane.
Moon will get his second start of the season as the Bulldogs and Gophers play the rubber match of the series Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
