SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team scored all of its 15 runs in the first four innings to defeat the University of Minnesota 15-6 Sunday on the campus of Sacramento State University. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last nine games to improve their record to 7-7.
Maxx Garrett produced three of the Bulldogs 15-hit barrage while Keegan Acker, Eric Lane, Tyler Chism, Marco Gonzales and Steven Halcomb each had two hits and drove in at least one RBI.
Cody Martin (2-0) was the winning pitcher after going five shutout innings with a season-high eight strikeouts. Starter Billy Moon went one inning and allowed four runs on six hits. Minnesota's (5-7) Austin Lubinsky suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, in 2 1/3 innings.
Trailing 4-3 in their half of the third inning, the Bulldogs got things going when Garrett led off with a single to third base and Gonzales followed with a RBI double to right center field to tie the game. After Cameron Edman reached on an error by the pitcher, Halcomb drove in Gonzales from third on a sacrifice fielder's choice. Acker followed with a RBI single to first and Lane hit a RBI ground out to the shortstop to give the Bulldogs a 8-4 lead.
Martin came into the game in the third inning inheriting runners on first and second and one out. He struck out the first batter he faced but allowed an RBI single to cut the Bulldogs lead to two. He got out of the inning with a groundout to the second baseman Acker.
The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Tyler Chism reached third base on an error charged to the center fielder to lead off the inning and Garrett drove him in with a single through the right side. After Gonzales was hit by the pitcher and Edman hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, Bolinger hit a RBI single through the left side and Halcomb hit into a RBI fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Acker and Lane followed with two RBI singles through the right side to give the Bulldogs a 15-6 lead.
The Bulldogs have one more trip left before making their home debut at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. They will head to San Antonio, Texas, to participate in the Irish Baseball Classic with the University of Iowa and University of Notre Dame. The Bulldogs open the tournament against the Hawkeyes Friday at 2 p.m. PT.
