BULLDOGS BACK ON THE ROAD: After playing 13 of its last 18 games at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field, Gonzaga University now begins a 13-game road stretch, the second-longest of the season. The Bulldogs next home series will not be until Memorial Weekend in the regular-season finale with the University of San Francisco. During their road trip, the Bulldogs will play three West Coast Conference series (Santa Clara University, the University of Portland and Pepperdine University) and two non-conference series (Brigham Young University and the University of Oregon). The Bulldogs opened the season on an 18-game road trip, going 10-7-1.

THE BULLDOGS ARE ON SWX: Gonzaga University baseball will have three games televised on SWX this season starting April 5 against Washington State University. The other games being televised are April 25 against the University of Washington and May 27 against the University of San Francisco.

BULLDOGS MADE A HUGE TURNAROUND: Gonzaga University has vastly improved its record this season. The Bulldogs have won 23 games so far this season, passing last year's mark of 20. They are also on pace to achieving their fourth 30-win season in five years with 16 games left in the regular-season.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Santa Clara University improved its record to 15-22 overall after a 10-6 win over the University of the Pacific Tuesday. Prior to playing the Tigers, the Broncos were swept by the University of San Francisco last weekend, falling to 2-7 in West Coast Conference play. Cory Hall has been the Broncos ace this season, going 4-4 with a 3.33 earned-run average and 55 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings. Third baseman Kyle DeMerritt paces the ballclub with a .321 batting average, 26 RBI and is one of three Broncos to pace the ballclub with eight doubles. Head coach Mark O'Brien is in his 10th year at the helm of the Broncos.
LAST TIME VERSUS THE BRONCOS: Santa Clara University swept Gonzaga University (15-3, 7-3, 6-1) in Spokane last season. Billy Moon, Steven Halcomb and Clayton Eslick led the Bulldogs efforts in offense in their rookie campaigns. Moon batted .444 with a triple and a team-best three RBI, Halcomb had a team-best five hits including a double and Eslick led the team with a pair of doubles.
HOME SWEET HOME: Gonzaga University played its 100th contest at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field against the University of San Diego April 10. The Bulldogs have compiled a record of 66-37 (.641) since they moved into their on-campus ballpark in 2007 and posted winning records in their first three seasons. Their season-best was 19-6 in their West Coast Conference regular-season and championship series titles season in 2009.
BRINGING THEM HOME: Gonzaga University has been very productive in scoring runs this season. The Bulldogs are leading the West Coast Conference in runs scored (195) and is sitting second in RBIs (166). Santa Clara University leads the conference in RBI with 169 while the University of San Francisco sits behind Gonzaga in runs scored with 186. In the individual categories, junior third baseman Eric Lane has touched home plate 31 times, the third-most in the conference, and sophomore outfielder Billy Moon has driven in 33 runs, the second-most in the conference.
MAKE THAT A DOUBLE: Gonzaga University has recorded 72 doubles this season, the second-most out of the West Coast Conference. The University of San Francisco paces the conference with 83. Individually, redshirt senior Cameron Edman sits in a tie with the University of Portland's Matt Mardesich for fourth with 12 two-baggers while Loyola Marymount University's Matt Koch leads the conference with 17.
EDMAN ON A ROLL: Redshirt senior catcher Cameron Edman has not only been leading Gonzaga University from behind home plate but has also been leading the ballclub offensively. In the last 10 games, he has been hitting .378 with a .784 slugging percentage. He registered three doubles and four home runs, including two in Sunday's 7-6 loss to Saint Mary's College.
PITCHERS LEADING THE WAY: Since opening day, Gonzaga University's pitching staff has been one of the best in the West Coast Conference. The Bulldogs have struck out 264 batters, sitting third the WCC with the University of San Francisco leading the conference with 310. Seventy-three of the Bulldogs strikeouts came from junior Ryan Carpenter, who leads the conference in the individual category. In addition, freshman Marco Gonzales sits in a three-way tie for the most wins in the conference with six and Cody Martin leads the conference in earned run average (0.95) and opposing batting average (.176).
MARTIN CHASING RECORDS: Cody Martin has been rewriting Gonzaga University's career record book during his senior campaign. He made his 79th appearance last Saturday against Saint Mary's College and is two away from tying Matt Siwek (1996-2000) for second in that category. He has also struck out 257 batters, passing Darin Blood (1993-95) for fourth in the all-time list and is now three away from tying current assistant coach Steve Bennett (1996-2000) for third.
CARPENTER ENTERS CAREER STRIKEOUT LIST: Senior right-hander Cody Martin is no longer the only active Gonzaga University pitcher to be in the top 10 of the career strikeout list. Junior left-hander Ryan Carpenter enters the with 195, passing Ed Clelland (2001-04) and Eric Dworkis (2002-04) for ninth and 10th on the list, respectively. He will now chase Barry Matthews (1999-2001), who sits in eighth with 215 career strikeouts.
CARPENTER THROWS FIRST COMPLETE-GAME: Junior left-hander Ryan Carpenter went the distance for the first time in his illustrious career in Gonzaga University's series-opening 5-2 win against Saint Mary's College last week. Carpenter struck out 11 to match his season best and only allowed three hits and a walk to beat the Gaels. The most innings Carpenter threw in a game prior to facing the Gaels was 7 1/3 which was at then-eighth-ranked Texas A&M University Feb. 25, the same outing where he flirted with a no-hitter and struck out 11 in six innings.
MARTIN ON NCWBA'S WATCH LIST: Gonzaga University senior pitcher Cody Martin was named to the midseason watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association April 21. Martin is one of 45 relief pitchers in NCAA Division I to be named on the watch list. He was previously included on the watch list as a sophomore and was selected NCBWA Freshman All-America second team. He owns a 0.95 earned-run average with a 2-1 record and seven saves in 16 appearances. He has posted 49 strikeouts in 38 innings.
ZAGS NAMED WCC RAWLINGS WEEKLY HONORS: Five Gonzaga University players have been named to the West Coast Conference Rawlings weekly honors this season. Junior Ryan Carpenter led off with WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week Feb. 28 for his outstanding performance at then-eighth-ranked Texas A&M University Feb. 25. Sophomore Billy Moon was named WCC Rawlings Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against the University of Iowa and University of Notre Dame in the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio, Texas. Freshman Marco Gonzales followed a week later as Pitcher of the Week for his stellar outing against then-11th-ranked UC Irvine March 27. Redshirt senior Cameron Edman was tabbed Player of the Week April 11 for hitting .467 (7-for-15) with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and a .800 slugging percentage against Washington State University and the University of San Diego. Senior right-hander Cody Martin is the most recent Bulldog to receive weekly accolades after being named Pitcher of the Week April 18 for pitching 3 2/3 hitless frames in three appearances.
ZAGS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH BY WCC COACHES: Gonzaga University was picked to finish sixth in the West Coast Conference for the 2011 season according to a preseason vote by the league's head coaches Feb. 10. The Bulldogs, who received 20 points in the vote, finished the 2010 season 20-36 overall and 8-13 in the WCC, tied for fifth in the league standings. Defending champion University of San Diego was favored to successfully defend its conference title, having garnered a total of 49 points and all seven possible first place votes. For the second straight season there will not be a WCC Championship Series. The regular-season champion will receive the WCC's automatic berth to the NCAA Baseball Championships.
CARPENTER SELECTED TO ALL-WCC PRESEASON TEAM: Junior left-handed pitcher Ryan Carpenter was Gonzaga University's lone selection to the Preseason All-West Coast Conference team. Carpenter started all 12 appearances last season, second-most out of the rotation. He led the Zag starters in earned-run average (5.67), opposing batting average (.273) and allowed the fewest earned runs (38) and home runs (2). He finished second behind senior right-hander Cody Martin in strikeouts with 53.
WHO ELSE IS BACK: Gonzaga University returns 16 players this season. Senior Cameron Edman (.248, 6 2B, 1 HR) returns to the role as catcher after making 31 starts from behind the plate last season. Junior Chris Sturdivant (.276, 6 2B, 26 RBI) continues his role as one of the Zags outfielders after posting the team's third-highest on-base percentage with a .393. Also returning from the bench are sophomore outfielder/pitcher Billy Moon and senior outfielder Tyler Chism.
FOUR TO JOIN THE ZAGS NEXT YEAR: Gonzaga University head coach Mark Machtolf has announced on Dec. 20, 2010 the signing of four Washington natives to national letters-of-intent. The Bulldogs will welcome for the 2012 season right-handed pitcher Kevin Moriarty out of Shoreline High in Shoreline, middle infielder Mitchell Gunsolus from Inglemoor High in Kenmore, left-handed pitcher/outfielder Derek Callahan of Edmonds-Woodway High in Edmonds and right-handed pitcher/third baseman Zach Abbruzza, hailing from Redmond High in Redmond.
RECAPPING LAST SEASON: Gonzaga University finished 20-36 overall and 8-13 in the West Coast Conference to place them in a tie for fifth in the standings last season. The Zags got offensive impacts from Drew Heid, Mark Castellitto and junior Andy Hunter. Heid led the Bulldogs in nearly all offensive categories, batting average (.390), doubles (18), triples (4), slugging percentage (.602), on-base percentage (.467) and stolen bases (8-for-14). Castellitto led the Bulldogs in RBIs with 50.
