SANTA CLARA, Calif. - One week after pitching his first complete-game, Ryan Carpenter went the distance again and flirted with a no-hitter in the Gonzaga University baseball team's 8-0 win over Santa Clara University in game one of the West Coast Conference series Friday.
Carpenter (6-1) was perfect for six innings but lost it in the seventh after allowing a leadoff walk followed by a single. He finished the evening striking out nine and scattering five hits.
The Bulldogs (23-13-1, 7-3 WCC) offense was quiet until the seventh when they used six hits and two errors to score five runs.
Billy Moon led the offense producing three of the Bulldogs 10-hit evening. Tyler Chism and Cameron Edman both had a pair of hits. Chism also hit his fourth home run of the year and Edman hit two doubles.
The Broncos (15-23, 2-8 WCC) starting pitcher Cory Hall (4-5) started strong until the seventh inning when Bulldogs started a hitting barrage against him.
The Bulldogs got on board in the second inning. Clayton Eslick led off reaching on an error by the Broncos first baseman and Andy Hunter was hit by Hall. Marco Gonzales laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position but Hall loaded the bases after walking Steven Halcomb. Eric Lane reached on an error by the second baseman but the play scored in the first run of the game. With Moon at the plate, Hunter scored the Bulldogs second run on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, Lane and Chism hit back-to-back singles and Moon hit a RBI single to left field but a fielding error by the left field allowed the runners to advance a base. The errors continued to hurt the Broncos as cleanup hitter Royce Bolinger reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Chism to score. Moon would score on a wild pitch and Bolinger scored in the Bulldogs sixth run on Edman's double to left field. Hunter would drive in the seventh run with a double to left field.
Chism extended Gonzaga's lead to eight with a one-out solo home run in the eighth inning.
The Broncos threatened Carpenter's shutout in the ninth inning. The Broncos loaded the bases on three singles but couldn't do any damage as Carpenter preserved his shutout getting the final batter to fly out to left field.
The two teams return to the field Saturday at 1 p.m.
