CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ryan Caballero, who was pulled in Friday's 4-1 loss to Cal State Bakersfield, came back Sunday to post his third shutout of the season as Gonzaga University and UMKC played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie Sunday at the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Nike Classic hosted by Oregon State University.
The last time the Bulldogs (2-4-1) played a scoreless tie was on the same Paul Lorenz Field as Sunday's match, deadlocking Oregon State 0-0 Sept. 6, 2008.
The biggest of UMKC (3-4-1) goalkeeper Kevin Corby's seven saves came at 16:48 when he saved Alec Cutter's penalty kick. Cutter shot to the right side but Corby read it well and made an easy catch save.
Caballero had four saves for the Bulldogs, two in each half, and wasn't tested in either overtime period. But he came up big in regulation with a breakaway save and another point-blank stop off his fingertips that slammed off the cross bar.
While each team had four shots in the double-overtime, only Corby was called on for a save, that coming in the second OT on Greg Carter's shot from 22 yards that was ticketed for the game-ending goal had Corby not come up with the big save.
"Both keepers played well today," Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "Both teams definitely had some chances. We were aggressive on offense"
Sunday's meeting was the second between the schools, Gonzaga taking the inaugural match 3-2 in the 2008 Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic. The Kangaroos, who defeated the host Beavers 2-1 Friday, are undefeated in their last four outings since opening the season with four straight setbacks. UMKC is the defending Summit League champion.
The Bulldogs held an 18-15 edge in shots and had 11 corner kicks to just four by the 'Roos. Gonzaga had lost two straight heading into Sunday's match.
Sunday's match was the final tune-up for West Coast Conference play, Gonzaga traveling to the University of San Francisco Friday for the WCC opener followed by a Sunday match at Santa Clara University.
