SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Four Gonzaga University women's tennis players closed out the weekend with wins in singles at the University of Texas - San Antonio Roadrunners Fall Tournament Sunday.
Freshman Katie Edwards, junior Britta Stime and senior Kristina Zauere each picked up a victory in their respective bracket. In an all-Gonzaga championship match in the Singles Flight 2, Edwards defeated fellow freshman Kylie Peek 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) to win the main draw title and become the first Gonzaga freshman to win a tournament title since Rika Mehndiratta did it in 2008.
"It was tough for Kylie and Katie to play each other, but they played well and the match was very close," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said.
In the Singles Flight 5, Stime won her match 7-5, 6-0 over Natalie Hand of the Roadrunners while Zauere picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the Singles Flight 3 back draw.
"Kristina and Britta played great. They were both very disciplined and they controlled their matches from start to finish," Gurule said.
Senior Sophie Lantta run in the Singles Flight 4 main draw came to an end in the championship match, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to Marie Leblond of UTEP. Freshman Alexandra Tallas also dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the back draw a redshirt junior Prue Teitzel came up short in the final round of the Singles Flight 1 back draw.
The Bulldogs will look to carry the momentum to the Eastern Washington University Fall Classic next weekend.
"Overall I was pleased with our efforts this weekend. I am excited to play next week a little closer to home," Gurule said.
