NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - (Feb. 11, 2012 - www.gozags.com) - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team dropped a tough 7-0 decision to No. 66 Cal State Northridge Saturday.
The Bulldogs (3-2) hung with the Matadors (3-2) throughout the day but couldn't come away with points. Prue Teitzel bounced back from a first-set loss in her No. 1 singles match, but her rally came up short as she lost the match 5-7, 6-2, 4-4 (6). Katie Edwards also forced a third set at the No. 2 spot but she dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision. At No. 4 singles, Kristina Zauere won the first set 6-1, but she couldn't secure the win as her opponent won the next two sets 6-1, 6-4.
Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule thought the tone of the match was set early, but his team made a huge effort to keep it close.
"Northridge really set the tone in doubles and we came out really flat, but the team really rebounded in singles." Gurule said. "Once again, the match score 0-7 doesn't reflect how close the match was. We were very close to turning the corner and winning the match. I was impressed with our fight and determination we had in singles. We'll regroup and fight hard again tomorrow at Fullerton."
The Bulldogs will conclude their southern California tour against Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 10 a.m.
