Gonzales Wins Pitching Duel As Zags Shutout Tigers

SPOKANE, Wash. - Marco Gonzales struck out eight batters as he went all the way to lead the Gonzaga University baseball team to a 2-0 victory over the University of the Pacific Saturday evening.

Pacific's Kyle Crawford (1-2) also threw a complete-game with two strikeouts and a walk, but the Tigers (3-15) offense could not break down Gonzales to help their starting pitcher.

Gonzales (3-0) was in command for a majority of the game. The sophomore allowed five hits and walked one in his first complete-game performance since May 16, 2011. The Bulldogs (12-5) were limited to singles on their 10-hit evening. Eric Lane, Royce Bolinger and Alex Stanford had two hits while Steven Halcomb, Clayton Eslick, Maxx Garrett and Alex Bonczyk added one.

The Bulldogs jumped on the board in the second inning. Stanford and Garrett hit back-to-back singles and Lane found hit a single to left center field deep enough for Stanford to score the first run of the game from second base.

The Tigers got an opportunity to tie the game in the sixth inning when the leadoff batter hit a double to left field. But the runner was stranded as Gonzales ended the inning with a groundout and back-to-back fly outs.

After Gonzales struck out the side in the seventh inning, the Bulldogs collected an insurance run in their half of the frame. Bonczyk hit a one-out single to center field and after moving to second on a balk, Lane moved him to third base on a groundout. Halcomb brought in the run with his base hit to center field.

Pacific knocked on the door again in the eighth inning. A fielding error by the second baseman Stanford allowed the leadoff hitter to reach safely. After a groundout, Gonzales picked off the runner at second base for the second out. Stanford would make up for his mistake as he made a huge dive near the second base bag to prevent a hard line drive from reaching center field and end the inning.

With the non-conference series clinched, the Bulldogs will look to sweep the Tigers Sunday at 1 p.m.
