MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened its West Coast Conference season with a tough 7-0 loss to 33rd-ranked Saint Mary's College Friday.

Although the Bulldogs (6-4, 0-1 WCC) were swept by the Gaels (9-5, 2-0 WCC) in all nine matches, several Zags played kept their matches close. After losing the first set 6-2 in her No. 4 singles match, Kristina Zauere answered back with a 6-2 set victory of her own but the senior lost the tiebreaker 1-0 (11-9). Sophie Lantta and Kylie Peek led the effort in doubles play, losing 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.

"Unfortunately we came up short today, but I was proud of how we competed as a team. We now have a short trip to San Diego to face another tough conference match," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said.

The Bulldogs will visit the University of San Diego campus Sunday at 10 a.m.
