SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's soccer team, a successful 5-2-0 non-conference season behind them, opens West Coast Conference play this week at Saint Mary's College Friday at 4 p.m. and at the University of San Francisco Sunday at 1 p.m.
Through 2009 Gonzaga University held an 11-9-3 edge in the series with Saint Mary's, but the Gaels have won six straight to grab a 15-11-3 advantage in the series. Following a 5-0 Gonzaga home win in the final meeting of '09, SMC won 1-0 at home and 2-1 at Gonzaga in 2010 to begin the current winning streak. The Gaels won 2-0 in Spokane and completed the 2013 season sweep with a 2-1 home victory. SMC won the 2011 WCC regular-season title and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Gonzaga trails San Francisco 14-13-1 in the all-time series, the Dons gaining the advantage with a four-match winning streak over the past three seasons. The Bulldogs had won 7-of-8 outings from 2006 to the first meeting in 2010 and had scored two or more goals in six of the wins. But in the last four meetings spanning three seasons the Dons have posted three shutout victories, including a 1-0 victory in the 2012 season finale at USF after taking the first match in Spokane 2-1.
