WTEN Perfect on Day Two of GU Fall Hidden Dual

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team played strong, aggressive tennis Saturday, and that led to a perfect 8-0 record for the Zags during day two of the GU Fall Hidden Duals, held at The Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash.

"We were very happy with our matches today, especially in doubles as we have been working on being aggressive and setting the tone," said Gonzaga women's head coach D.J. Gurule. "That really showed this morning."

Gonzaga's doubles teams started the day well with each tallying a win in their matches against Idaho. Katie Edwards and Samantha Polayes fell behind the Vandals' Emmie Marx and Lucia Badillos 0-2 early in the pro set but roared back, winning eight straight sets to post an 8-2 win.

Kylie Peek and Melanie Yates also posted a big victory, beating Idaho's Sophie Vickers and Galina Bykova 8-3. The win was their first of the fall season as a doubles pair after Yates returned from injury during day one of the GU Fall Hidden Dual.

Rounding out doubles play, Alex Bourguignon and Franziska Koehler capped off the perfect doubles round with an exciting 8-7 (5) tiebreak victory over Beatriz Flores and Rita Bermudez, also of Idaho. The two have now combined for a 5-3 record in doubles matches this fall.

GU's roll continued in singles play with another perfect round. Peek tallied the biggest win in singles play, ceding only three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Montana State's Angelina Phillipova. Polayes and Edwards also tallied two-set singles victories as Polayes beat Laura Middel of MSU 6-4, 6-2. Edwards dispatched the Bobcats' Wanda Holopainen 6-3, 6-4, for her first singles victory of the fall.

Two Zags went to three sets before coming out ahead. Bourguignon beat Naomi Holopainen 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Koehler also dropped the first set before winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Molly Crum. Both GU opponents were from Montana State.

"It was great to see the team fighting in their singles matches today," Gurule said. "We always want to compete and bring good energy as a team and I think we accomplished that."

Gonzaga wraps up its own tournament Sunday, Nov. 9. Doubles play for the Bulldogs begins at 8:00 a.m. while they start their only singles session at 3:00 p.m., again at The Stevens Center.
