SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team begins the 2014-15 season this weekend, taking part in the WSU Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash., from Friday, Sept. 26, to Sunday, Sept. 28.
"This tournament is a great opportunity to play against outside competition," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "We'll get to play against a bunch of regional teams there, including tough opponents like Washington State and Boise State."
Four Zags will be competing in the tournament, including freshman Alex Bourguignon, who will be making her collegiate debut this weekend.
Also making the short trip to Pullman will be Franziska Koehler, Kylie Peek, and Samantha Polayes. Peek will kick off her senior year at the Cougar Classic while Koehler and Polayes will both be entering their junior seasons.
Bourguignon and Polayes will compete in the Crimson singles bracket—the top flight in the tournament—while Koehler and Peek compete in the Gray Singles bracket. The two Gray flight entrants will also team up and play in the Crimson Doubles bracket.
"We've been working hard in practice," said Gurule," and we're excited to see how we compete against other schools and other players."
Doubles action gets started at 9:00 a.m. Friday while singles matches get underway at 11:00 a.m. in the Crimson bracket and 12:30 p.m. in the Gray bracket.
