PULLMAN, Wash.—It was a good day on the courts for the Gonzaga University women's tennis team Saturday as two Bulldogs stayed alive in their respective brackets of the WSU Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash.
Freshman Alex Bourguignon continued to make noise in her first Division I tournament, reaching the championship match of the top singles draw, the Crimson bracket. Bourguignon opened the day with a 7-5, 6-3 quarterfinal victory over Donika Bashota of Washington State and capped it off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Boise State's Arianna Paules Aldrey in the semifinals. She'll face Washington State's Elizaveta Luzina, the flight's No. 1 seed, in the final match.
"Alex did a great job of competing today," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "She showed a lot of maturity and focus in her two matches."
Also advancing through two rounds Saturday, Franziska Koehler progressed to the Gray singles flight consolation semifinal. She swept Montana's Cat Orfanos 6-1, 6-4 in her first match in the consolation bracket and then advanced to the semifinal via a walkover. She'll square off against Angelina Philipova of Montana State in the semifinals.
Samantha Polayes also tallied a victory Saturday, beating Janaya Smith of Eastern Washington 6-4, 6-2 in her Crimson singles bracket consolation match. The junior then took on Boise State's Megan LaLone, falling 6-1, 6-2.
Gonzaga athletes played one doubles match, a consolation contest in the Gray doubles bracket. The Bulldogs' team of Polayes and Bourguignon fell 6-2 to Seattle U's duo of Barbara Carey and Madison Maloney.
The Zags will close out their involvement in the Cougar Classic Sunday, Sept. 28, with Bourguignon's Crimson singles final and the last two rounds of Koeher's Gray singles consolation bracket. Those matches will again take place on the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts in Pullman.
