June 22, 2016 SAINT-DENIS, France -- Former Gonzaga men's soccer player Kari Arnason, a member of the Iceland National Team in UEFA Euro 2016, helped his nation advance to the Round of 16 on Wednesday with a 2-1 last-second win over Austria.
Arnason, who was a midfielder for Gonzaga in 2002-03, has started all three games and played all 270 minutes at defender for undefeated (1-0-2) Iceland. After a pair of ties to open Euro 2016 against Hungary and Portugal, Iceland's victory over Austria came in dramatic fashion, while Arnason was named Man of the Match. He earned an assist on Iceland's first goal of the game and was a force on defense. He was credited with three blocks, six clearances and seven aerial duel wins.
Arnason's teammate Arnor Ingvi Traustason knocked in the game-winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time on a breakaway attack. Click here to see ESPN's highlight of the goal.
Iceland, with a population of 330,000, is the smallest country in the tournament, but has seen an incredible amount of support from fans. "It's like having your family at the game," Arnason told the media of the team's 10,000 supporters. "I know probably 50 percent of our crowd, or recognize them. Not probably, but most definitely [Iceland's biggest result]. It's amazing to be a part of this team; the camaraderie and the togetherness of this team is unbelievable and I wish this could be a club team to be honest. I think that most of the boys would want that. We just enjoy our time together and are absolutely buzzing with this result."
With the win over Austria, Iceland tied with Hungary for the group lead with five points, and finished second by virtue of goal differential. Iceland's defense, which Arnason leads, has allowed just three goals in three games. Iceland tied both Portugal and Hungary 1-1 in the opening matches.
Gonzaga's Icelandic ties run much deeper than Arnason with 21-year head coach Einar Thorarinsson hailing from the country as well as defender David Sigurdsson, who wrapped up his career in a Bulldog uniform last fall.
Iceland will now take on England in the Round of 16 of the knockout stage on Monday in Nice, France.
