Women's Tennis Whittle, Garley Ranked in Latest Oracle/ITA National Rankings

Marks the first time in program history two players have simultaneously been ranked

TEMPE, Ariz. – Gonzaga women's tennis' Sophie Whittle and Domonique Garley landed on the latest Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings marking the first time in program history that two Bulldogs have been nationally ranked simultaneously.

"I am so happy for both Sophie and Domonique," head women's tennis coach D.J. Gurule said. "These rankings are direct reflections of the hard work and determination they both have. To have two players ranked is not only a reflection of their hard work, but more importantly, it is a testament to their teammates and their ability to push both Sophie and Domonique every day."

Whittle, who was ranked 35th in the preseason rankings released on Sept. 11, jumped 30 spots to rank fifth overall; it marks the highest ranking in Gonzaga history. Whittle put together a historic fall season as she won eight matches in six days to win the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in early October.

"Sophie has had an amazing fall, and winning the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships is such an accomplishment," Gurule said. "She deserves all the accolades and rankings she receives. She is an ultimate competitor, and we are privileged to have her represent Gonzaga."

Garley picked up her first career singles ranking at No. 79. This fall, Garley recorded several singles victories, highlighted by a win over then-No. 20 Marianna Petrei of Idaho. Garley defeated Petrei in two sets (7-5, 6-1) on the final day of the Gonzaga Invitational.

"Domonique's improvement has been constant and impressive," Gurule said. "Her commitment to perfection has really driven her to new heights. I am so happy she is getting the recognition she deserves."

Whittle and Garley and the rest of the Gonzaga women's tennis team returns to the court in their dual season opener against Idaho on Jan. 19, 2019 at 9 a.m. at The Stevens Center. For a full look at the 2019 spring schedule, click here.
