Four Zags had two hits each, but they stranded 13 runners on base and weren't able to rally in the ninth after Washington's tie-breaking two-run homer in the eighth. After going down 3-2, the evened the score with an RBI single in the top of the eighth before the Huskies got their final runs.
"It was a good battle from our guys tonight, that's a winnable game that didn't go our way," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We are ready to get another chance at them tomorrow."
GU starter Justin Blatner cruised through the first five innings, allowing just two hits in the span, but ran into trouble to start the sixth and ended up with three earned runs to his ledger with five hits, four strikeouts, and one walk. Trent Schulte entered and got out of a bases loaded jam, but not before allowing one inherited run to score. He pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Gunnar Schubert, Ernie Yake, Nick Brooks and Carson Breshears each collected two hits on the night, while Jake Vieth reached three times with a hit and two walks.
The Zags got on the board first in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Nick Brooks, his second of the year, and a sacrifice fly from Schubert.
Gonzaga wraps its two-game series with Washington on Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. in Seattle. Live scoring and video will be available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.
