D.J. Gurule is in his 15th season at the helm of the Gonzaga women's tennis program, and is now 9-6 overall in season openers with the 6-1 win over Idaho. GU has won each of the last six season-openers.
- Against the Vandals, Gonzaga dominated doubles from the start with a sweep and then quickly closed out the match in singles with the first three matches to finish in straight sets.
Sophie Whittle,
Graciela Rosas and
Haruna Tsuruta clinched the match, while newcomers
Sara Komer and
Vlada Medvedcova each got their first dual-match wins in a Zag uniform.
- Whittle and Rosas combined for a doubles win on No. 1, and Komer and
Domonique Garley got the victory on No. 2 to clinch the point.Â
- Whittle enters the weekend ranked No. 5 nationally in singles, and is coming off an ITA National Championship in the fall.Â
- Garley is ranked No. 79 in singles.
ITA Kickoff Notes
- The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team is serving as one of 15 hosts for the 11th Annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend.
- In addition to Duke and Gonzaga, Nebraska and Old Dominion are also slated to compete in the two-day event held in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
- The winner from each of the 15 sites earns a trip to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the 2019 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, scheduled for Feb. 8-11.
