PULLMAN, Wash. – Gonzaga women's tennis completed the first day of action at the Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash., on Friday.
Freshman
Maria Frampton earned her first-career collegiate victory in her first-ever match and the GU duo of
Tamara Anderson and
Haruna Tsuruta won twice in doubles on the day.
"Haruna [Tsuruta] and Tamara [Anderson] did a really good job coming out with a great energy in doubles this morning," assistant coach
Natalie Pluskota-Hamberg said. "It was really exciting to watch Maria get her first singles win as a Zag, really proud of the way she competed today. We are looking forward to using that momentum going into tomorrow's matches."
Playing in the Cougar Flight, Frampton cruised to a win over Seattle U's Aranza Sanabria with a straight-set 6-3, 6-0 scoreline.
In doubles, Anderson and Tsuruta defeated a duo from Montana 6-1 in the first round and then followed that up with a 6-2 win over Idaho to advance to the semifinals of the Crimson Flight.
Gonzaga will be back in action at the Cougar Classic on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's action begins at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts at 10 a.m.
