SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's tennis team was again solid on the second day of action at the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday at the Stevens Center.
"It was another great day for us at home," head coach DJ Gurule said. "Overall, I thought we did a great job competing. We still need to accept what we can control, but we are putting ourselves in good positions to succeed. We are looking forward to finishing our fall season on a high note tomorrow."
In the opening session of the day, GU took four of the six singles matches against Portland with all wins coming in straight sets. Gonzaga freshman
Jenna Sloan was dominant, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Pilots' Raphaelle LeBlanc, while senior
Kate Ketels finished shortly after with a 6-1, 6-3 win over UP's Heli Sunjic.
Senior
Taylor Gruber was solid in a 6-4, 6-3 win over Laura Okazaki, and sophomore
Vlada Medvedcova beat the Pilots' Emily Soares 6-2, 7-6(3).
In doubles, GU faced off against Montana State and won two of three matches. On Court 2, the pair of Ketels and Medvedcova was dominant, winning 8-2 over the Bobcats' Caitlin Ward and Mirte Van Baelen. After UP took a win on No. 3, GU's duo of Broerman and Gruber battled back on Court 1. The Zags were down 4-5, but came from behind to take an 8-7(3) tiebreak win.
