SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Gonzaga women's tennis player
Sophie Whittle was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, league officials announced Wednesday.
In addition to the being named the league's best player, Whittle was also named to the All-WCC First Team in singles, and along with partner
Graciela Rosas, was named All-WCC First Team in Doubles. Rosas earned All-WCC Second Team honors in singles as well.
Whittle, the nation's No. 10-ranked player, set a school record with 27 singles victories this season, including an 8-3 mark against ranked opponents. She reached as high as No. 1 earlier in the spring season, and also won the ITA National Championship in singles at the Riviera All-American. Whittle compiled a 13-4 mark in dual-match play, including a 6-1 record against WCC opponents. She was named to the first team for the third straight season.
As a doubles pair, Whittle and Rosas are also one of the nation's best, ranking No. 23 nationally with a 19-3 overall record. The pair went 14-3 in dual-match play with a 6-3 record in conference and three overall wins over ranked opponents. The pair earned first team honors for the third straight year, and Whittle earned it for the fourth straight year.
Rosas put together a stellar senior season in singles, playing the No. 2 spot in the lineup for GU. She went 13-7 overall in singles, but her 5-0 mark in duals against conference opponents was paramount to Gonzaga earning the No. 3 seed in the league.
GU is back on the court on Thursday at the WCC Championships in Claremont, Calif. The Zags face No. 6-seeded BYU at 10 a.m. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
