SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's soccer announced its strong 2019 schedule on Thursday, featuring four regular season games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season.
Head coach
Paul Meehan's squad also starts the year with three exhibitions against NCAA Tournament teams in Air Force (Aug. 20) and Denver (Aug. 23) on the road, before returning for a final tuneup at Luger Field against Washington at 7 p.m. on Aug. 26. A stern road test then awaits the Zags with eight of the first 10 regular season matches away from Spokane.
"This is a challenging schedule right from the start – three exhibition matches against teams that went to the NCAA tournament in 2018," Meehan said. "I believe this will more than prepare us for the regular season which includes several games against programs we've not played in recent years."
The regular season begins at Tulsa on Aug. 30, and the home opener is Sept. 1 against Sacramento State. Road matches at Marist and Fairleigh Dickinson precede GU's next home match against UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 12.
A California swing at Cal Poly, Cal Baptist and NCAA qualifier UC Irvine to wrap up September and lead into a two-week break before beginning the West Coast Conference slate at LMU on Oct. 12. A road game at Washington on Oct. 16 is the final non-conference game.
GU's league slate the rest of the way then features three NCAA teams that all won their postseason opener last season in Portland (road), Saint Mary's (home) and Pacific (road). GU hosts San Francisco on Oct. 19, Saint Mary's on Nov. 2 and Santa Clara on Nov. 9 before the season finale at Pacific on Nov. 16.
