BERKELEY, Calif. – Gonzaga women's tennis completed the first day of action at the three-day Cal Fall Invite in Berkeley, Calif.
The event got underway approximately three hours late due to rain in the area, which allowed just one of the two rounds of scheduled singles to be played. Overall on the day, Gonzaga grabbed two doubles wins and three singles wins.
There was a lot of good things we did today, but also a lot of things we need to work on," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "Overall, I thought we competed well. Tomorrow is going to be a long, tough test, but the ladies will be ready."
GU went 2-1 in doubles to start the day with pairs of
Vlada Medvedcova and
Katie Day getting the first victory, followed by a win from
Kate Ketels and
Haruna Tsuruta. Medvedcova and Day won 8-4, while Ketels and Tsuruta took an 8-5 win.
In singles, Gonzaga collected three first-round victories, including freshman
Cate Broerman's first collegiate win, a 7-6(6), 6-3 triumph. Ketels earned a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory, and Medvedcova earned a three-set win to move on to the second round in her bracket.
Gonzaga will be back in action at Cal on Saturday and Sunday with matches beginning in the morning and running throughout the day. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.
