BERKELEY, Calif. – Gonzaga women's tennis freshman
Cate Broerman turned in a strong weekend, reaching the final of the Gold draw at the Cal Fall Invite on Sunday in Berkeley, Calif.
In her first career collegiate tournament, Broerman began the day with a semifinal victory in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4 over Cal's Jessica Zeynel to reach the final against Cal's Katerina Stloukalova. The two battled with Broerman winning the first set 7-6, but Cal took the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to win the Gold singles title.
"We came out a bit slow this morning, but made the proper adjustments to finish our singles matches strong," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "Overall, we had a solid weekend as a team. Cate [Broerman] did an amazing job in her first tournament as a Zag. She showed maturity and grit every day. We are excited for this group to keep growing together."
Taylor Gruber partnered with Broerman to reach the consolation finals in doubles play, beut fell in a tiebreaker. Four Zags collected singles wins in consolation play on the day, including
Kate Ketels,
Taylor Gruber,
Haruna Tsuruta and
Katie Day.
