WTEN: Zags Defeat Pacific 6-1 on Senior Day

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team defeated visiting Pacific 6-1 on Senior Day inside the Stevens Center Saturday afternoon.

The Zags swept the doubles point, winning on all three courts to get the early 1-0 lead in the match. On No. 2, Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta teamed up to defeat Pacific's Danielle Zamora and Zoe Eberle 6-1. Hannah Jones and Adrianna Sosnowska were next to finish, winning 6-1 at No. 1. Though the doubles point had already been won, Taylor Gruber and Kianna Oda played out their match on No. 3, defeating Elise Frigout and Ella Leroy 6-2.

In singles play, Jenna Sloan was the first to finish on No. 6, defeating Maile Brilhante 6-2, 6-3. Cate Broerman finished shortly after on No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Frigout. Jones clinched the match point with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory on No. 5.

While the Bulldogs had already won the match, they played out all three remaining courts. Tsuruta was first to finish, coming back in her last two sets for the victory. She fell 3-6 in her first set but won 6-2 in the second and 6-4 in the third to secure the win. On court 1, Sosnowska won her first set 6-2 but fell 1-6 in the second. After a grueling tie break she fell 6-7 (6-8) to give the Tigers their only point of the match. Ketels fell 6-7 (6-8) in the first set, battled for the 7-6 (7-3) win in the second and completed the win with the 12-10 tiebreak.

Additionally, the team honored four current seniors and one 2020 graduate: Jones, Gruber, Katie Day, Tsuruta and Ketels. Jones joined the Zags this season, but she has made a huge impact. Her overall record is 9-4 and she was named as the WCC Doubles Team of the Week with doubles partner Sosnowska. Gruber joined the program two years ago and has an overall 15-13 record. This season she has put together four-straight doubles victories and has claimed all her victories this season in straight sets. Katie Day, a 2020 graduate, celebrated her senior day with the team after battling primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma for most of her senior season. Prior to her courageous win over cancer, she spent three and a half years with the Zags and finished 7-2 overall in her last season. She was also named an ITA scholar in her time as a Zag.

Tsuruta is in her fifth year with Gonzaga. She ranks top ten in program history in multiple categories in singles and doubles play, and holds the program record for conference wins as a pair with seven. She is also an All-WCC Performer and earned All-WCC Doubles Honorable Mention Honors in 2018. Ketels is also in her fifth year at Gonzaga and ranks in the top 10 in program history for several single season categories, as well as top ten in multiple career categories including singles overall wins and win percentage. She was also named a WCC All-Academic and ITA scholar athlete.

The team travels to San Diego for their last match of the season on Wednesday, April 28 at 12 p.m. Check GoZags.com for up-to-date match time information.
