FULL RESULTS
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In the first fall tournament of the season, Gonzaga's women's tennis team found early success in day one of the Gopher Invitational.
Including GU, there are six teams competing in the invitational. Other teams participating include Iowa State, Drake, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
SINGLES COMPETITION
Junior Cate Broerman opened play with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Habiba Aly. She continues competition tomorrow against Andrea Jansson. Senior Adrianna Sosnowska defeated Sapir Sela, 6-3, 6-2, in her first singles match. She will take on Rachel Hanford in tomorrow's draw.
Junior Jenna Sloan won her first match, 7-6 (6). 6-2, against Daria Walczak. She will compete against Emilee Duong tomorrow morning. Sophomore Kianna Oda defeated Nina Zdravkoic 6-4, 6-1, in her opening match. Tomorrow, she will take on Mille Haagensen.
Freshman Caroline Wernli had a three-set thriller against Lucy Lu. Wernli lost the first set, 1-6, but came back in the second to win, 6-2. In the third set, Wernli came out on top in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6). She takes on Rebecca Ehn tomorrow morning.
Senior Vlada Medvedcova opened singles with a 0-6, 0-6, loss to Dalila Said. She will compete against Beata Havlickova in tomorrow's match. Graduate student Frederikke Svarre fell, 2-6, in both sets against Ines Stephani and continues play against Jana Lazarevic on Saturday.
Junior Maria Frampton also won a close three-set match against Kendall Hunt. Frampton won 6-1 in the first set, but then fell, 5-7, in the second. She came out on top in the third set, winning 6-4. She competes against Lucia Rizza tomorrow.
Singles action will begin again tomorrow after doubles wrap up. The estimated time 11:30 a.m. Central Time.
DOUBLES COMPETITION
Oda and sophomore Tiegan Aitken fell in the first match 6-2, but came back to win their second match 6-0.
Broerman and Sloan were paired up in doubles action and fell in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (4). They came back to win in the second match of the day, defeating their opponent 6-3.
Frampton and Wernli fell 6-1 in their first match of the day and lost 6-3 in their second.
