The Zags will take a break until Nov. 6 when they compete at the Head of the Lake
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's rowing team opened up the fall season this morning on the Spokane River and GU's top boat finished first ahead of Oregon State, Loyola Marymount and Washington State.
"It was a great day for our program," head coach Andrew Derrick said. "Beautiful weather, water, and lots of alumni in attendance along with great effort and execution from our women made for some exciting results. I loved the way our team arrived at the boathouse today with a sense of purpose and ready to own their performance. They did a great job and took full advantage of a great opportunity to race really good competition. Really proud of our veterans as well as the 27 athletes that race as a Zag for the first time today."
This marked the first collegiate race for 15 new Zags, as freshman or transfers. It was also the first race for 12 novice rowers in the GU program.
In the varsity eight race, the 1V8 boat took first with a time of 17:04. The boat edged WSU's 17:06 finish as Oregon State took third with a time of 17:15. The Zags had three other boats compete in the race with the 2V8 placing fifth (17:43), the 3V8 taking eighth (17:54) and the 4V8 crew finishing 11th (19:15).
The next race was another round of collegiate eight boats and GU's 3V8 boat placed second with a 18:47 time, just behind LMU's finish of 18:33. The Zags had a novice boat also compete to place fourth (20:18) and a second novice boat that placed fifth (22:07).
In the collegiate fours race, the Zags finished sixth with a time of 19:31. Two other boats competed in the same race for GU as 2V4 finished eighth (19:43) and 3V4 placed 11th (20:05).
The last race of the day was the collegiate pairs competition with Gonzaga's 2B boat taking first with a second of 20:39. The other 2A boat placed first with a time of 20:41.
Up Next: Gonzaga finishes the fall season on Nov. 6 at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash.
