Bulldogs Announce 2023 Schedule

Features premier series with eight different 2022 NCAA Regional teams

SPOKANE, Wash. — Coming off their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and their highest ranking under Head Coach Mark Machtolf, Gonzaga baseball will face eight teams that participated in the 2022 Tournament along with 22 games at Patterson Baseball Complex as part of a 50-game schedule announced Thursday.

13 of GU's 19 opponents finished last season in the Top 150 in the NCAA's final RPI ranking, with two of those opponents  — Tennessee and Oregon State — finishing No. 1 and No. 2 in those final rankings before hosting NCAA Regionals. Other highlights include a three-game series with 2022 College World Series Runner-Up Oklahoma in Spokane and a two-game midweek matchup with Oregon in Eugene.

The Bulldogs, who were ranked as high as No. 10 in last year's Collegiate Baseball News rankings and finished the season 36-17 for their seventh consecutive 30-win year under Machtolf, are slated to open the season with a four-game series against Texas Tech at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders went 29-22 in 2022, reaching Game Four of the Statesboro Regional as a No. 2 seed.

A slew of premier opponents fills the next two weeks of GU's non conference schedule, with two games each against Ohio State and Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz. (Feb. 24-26) followed by a three-game series with Tennessee at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville (March 3-5). The Bulldogs' trip to Knoxville to take on the reigning SEC champions will be the only the second time the teams have faced each other and the first since a neutral-site matchup in Seattle in 1992.

GU's home opener is set for March 10, with a three-game swing against UC Irvine at Patterson. Two days later, the Zags hit the road again for two games with Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. The two teams are 1-1 all-time after splitting a pair of games at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. in 2019.

The reigning WCC Regular Season Champions' repeat bid begins at home this year when the Bulldogs play host to San Francisco March 17-19. After a road trip to Pepperdine (March 24-26), the Zags will have a pair of crucial home series back-to-back with BYU (March 30-April 1) and 2022 WCC Tournament Champions San Diego (April 6-8) coming to Patterson.

A road trip to Corvallis, Ore. for two midweek games with Oregon State is up next on April 10-11, marking the 13th and 14th time they've squared off in the last five years. The Zags went 1-3 against the Beavs in 2022, dropping a pair of neutral site games in Surprise to start the year but splitting a pair on the road, with GU's 13-6 win becoming their highest-ranked win in history.

A midweek matchup with in-state rival Washington State on April 15 is sandwiched between road WCC series with LMU (14-16) and Portland (April 21-23), with another two-game Pac-12 swing with the Ducks in Eugene slated for April 25-26. After playing host to Pacific April 28-30, the Bulldogs head to Pullman for their second game against the Cougars.

Saint Mary's College (May 5-7) will be GU's final home WCC opponent of the year before the Bulldogs host the Sooners May 19-21. Oklahoma finished last season 45-24, reaching the CWS final before falling to Ole Miss. The two teams have only played once, a 6-4 neutral-site win for GU in 2014. One more road trip to Santa Clara May 19-21 closes out GU's regular season slate, with dates for the WCC Championship Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in May still TBD.
